Artist Statement
I continue to create glass works with "movement" as my theme.
"Movement" is always accompanied by a state of "stillness." These two seem to exist in a relationship filled with tension, opposing yet attracting each other. I wish to express this antagonistic force and the state born at that boundary, and I continue to challenge myself in form and technique through the medium of glass.
Why glass? Because I sense "movement" in glass itself. Its nature, constantly changing with light, heat, and gravity, creates a momentary tension. I am deeply drawn to that instant.
At the same time, working with glass involves many difficulties. Yet it is precisely because of this that I feel there is still unexplored "room" in technique, material, and imagination. I believe that continuing to observe this "room" offers clues leading to new forms.
I question existing choices of technique, material, and expression, researching why they have been chosen and whether other possibilities exist. To express more richly and deeply, I face glass as a material and technique, wishing to draw out more of its power.
In my practice, I often use "kiln-working techniques," melting and shaping glass in an electric kiln. In the kiln, the glass leaves my hands and takes shape over a long period. This time calms me and allows me to face my work more objectively, even while holding expectations of "it will become this" or "I hope it becomes this."
I have expectations in glass.
